[Flower logo of the Medieval History Course] Field trip (30th January, 2011)

The Trappist Monastery
- at Lantau Island opposite to Ping Chau Island

The monastery, called Our Lady of Joy Abbey, belongs to the Order of Cistercians of the Strict Observance. The name Cistercian is taken from a French town, Citeaux, where Saint Bernard of Clairvaux (1090-1153) founded the Order in 1098 following the spirit of St. Benedict of Nursia (ca. 480 - ca. 547) who founded the monastery of Monte Cassino in Italy.
Students will be surprised by its medieval spirit of simplicity, one of the characteristics of this Order.
